Steve Miller Band - The Joker (1973)

Steve Miller's classic song was first released in October 1973 and it was a smash hit in the USA, but it did nothing in the UK at first. However, in 1990 it was used in a TV commercial and that stimulated a new interest in the song, propelling it to the top of the UK charts some 17 years after it first scored in its home territory.

  • I don't have anything to add.

But I've enjoyed reading this entire blog.

    :)

Do you like this song, Welby? I took the liberty of including the unedited album version for everyone here to enjoy. The single version fades out just before the last chorus (that didn't stop it being a hit though).

  • Yes, I do like this song.

    :)

Upon further thought, I guess I could call myself a Steve Miller Band fan.  "Fly Like an Eagle" enthralls me every time!

    This one's my favourite:

I think every "Best of Steve Miller" CD should open with this one. I don't know why, but it wasn't originally an opening track on an album. I think it makes a perfect opener. :)

  • Swingtown is great. He had 50,000 people singing the chorus on that at the top of their lungs. It was echoing off the buildings in downtown Austin. It was WAY cool!

I love "Swingtown". Sadly it wasn't a hit in the UK, although it did get played on the radio about 3 or 4 times and I was lucky enough to hear it and even luckier to find a copy at a cheap price. Since it was a hit in the US, I could never understand its failure in the UK.
