It's protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, can only be repealed by another one (like the 18th was set aside by the 21st). For an amendment to become law, it has to be ratified either by a two-thirds majority of both Houses (Trump hasn't got the numbers) or by a minimum of 34 state legislatures (he's never has anything approaching that kind of support, either).Ruling by decree is something dictators do.

Yesterday, they were “very tough criminal elements“, last week they were “unknown Middle Easterners“ and MS-13. On televised reports we see poor people: thin men, women and children, homeless and ragged. So which is it?

Are foreigners "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States, just by being IN the United States (or its territory)?...The legal definition of jurisdiction is "the authority given by law to a court to try cases and rule on legal matters within a particular geographic area and/or over certain types of legal cases." According to this definition, if foreigners are NOT subject to the jurisdiction of the US then American police could not arrest them - and they could not be tried in American courts. This is the protection foreign diplomats get with "diplomatic immunity". If every foreigner had this protection, there would be no need for a special exemption for diplo... less

A truce is the immediate remedy I thought of when I first became aware of this day-long topic thread, I just haven't been available until now. I have only seen a glimpse of the traffic concerning this row, and that was more than ten hours ago, so I don't know what else has transpired nor which drawbridges have been pulled up around your castle and around my castle. I have not read the depth and breadth of what all has been written, nor will I be able to, but I understand it's a lot. To me, it seems pointless to fight about a comment I made in passing that I had no idea would hit you in this manner. I believe you have the right not only to post the photo, but also to defend it. I also believe I have the right to express my perception of it, and that it's ok if neither you nor I agree with each other. I did not disparage you as a person nor accuse you of any outright wrongdoing, I voiced my opinion about what can or could be construed by the photo. I readily state that because it's ... less

Who will carry on in my legacy? I have to pass the torch. Medical science has failed me. Look, I couldn't even muster up the gumption to put a tilde here.

Now, in this case, I don't disagree that the guy they're referencing is "evil," though the term is arguably a bit moralistic for me. However, I do question whether news outlets should be making these kinds of judgments. Shouldn't they be simply stating the facts? i.e. "One of the men behind..." or "One of the men convicted for..."Again, if you got the same notification I did and know what story I'm referencing, I'm not saying the term was wrong, but it does trouble me that a news outlet would use an opinion-based term. Maybe this one was a slam dunk, but who's to say who they might call "evil" later? less
